Aug 2025 | Native Edge Landscapes
At Native Edge Landscapes, we’re proud to be designing and installing remarkable fire-wise landscapes that don’t just meet defensible space guidelines — they elevate them. This recently completed project on Flagstaff Mountain outside Boulder, Colorado showcases our approach. Low-fuel, low-maintenance, and high visual impact in Zone 1 (0-5′ from the home). Proof that creating beautiful, defensible space where it matters most doesn’t need to be boring!

Through expert planning, thoughtful material choices, and precision execution, homeowners in the mountains increase wildfire resilience without compromising aesthetics or function. This landscape – a precise and intentional combination of concrete block and boulder retaining walls, sandstone steps and pathways, and a natural moss rock mosaic bed surface bound together with a poly-sand grout – is more than just fire-wise, it’s incredibly low maintenance, low water, and dramatically improves the flow and circulation around the home.

Projects like this demand seamless collaboration at every step. From the initial conversations and design work to the final installation in the field, successful outcomes like this require a multidisciplinary team and a clear and shared vision by everyone involved. Because in the wildland-urban interface, beauty, function and safety should go hand in hand.
